Four questions that bring AI to the boardroom
A practical lens on performance, costs, dependency and competitive position.
Start with the business
AI is an input to operating performance. The useful conversation connects measurable outcomes to capital allocation, risk and the ability to compete. These questions provide a starting point for a diagnostic, not universal assumptions about any organization.
1. Where can work be redesigned?
Identify tasks and roles where a tested system can match the required output, quality and controls. Assess the workflow, the people affected and the human decisions that must remain explicit. Give each evaluation an owner, a budget and a review date.
2. What does AI cost, and what does it return?
Reconstruct expenditure by vendor and use case. Include model usage, software add-ons, embedded AI, internal teams and pilots. Compare the full operating cost with measured benefits, and identify initiatives that should change or stop.
3. How concentrated is our dependency?
Map actual production usage across providers. Stress-test a material pricing or availability change as a scenario, not a forecast. Examine fallback options, switching costs and which workloads can run elsewhere.
4. How is the cost of competing changing?
Review what it now costs to reproduce a product or workflow. Consider new entrants and customers building adequate alternatives themselves. Use evidence from competitive losses and churn rather than assumptions.
Make the answers actionable
Translate findings into a prioritized roadmap, named responsibilities and measurable review points. A productive diagnostic ends with decisions that can be executed.
